ARL Stereoscopic Technology and Production

01 Jan 2010

ARL's first 3D stereoscopic film, 6 months in the making and involving a French film crew, cinematographer Mike Single and post-production facility the Video Factory, was opened in a purpose built theatre in December 2008. Aoraki, Mt Cook has been widely acclaimed by visitors and guests at the Edmund Hillary Centre in Mt. Cook Heritage Park. Not only did ARL produce all of the computer graphics and special effects for the 15 minute production, it's developers also designed the hardware and software projection system for delivering the film in full HD. Aoraki, Mt Cook takes the viewer on a 3D journey from the beginning of the Universe, through the mystical Ngai Tahu legend of creation, into 3D footage of the beautiful Southern Alps and Mt. Cook.

ARL has sinced worked on a number of other 3D productions for Mike Single, including a 4D theatre production, 'Ice Voyage', shot in Antarctica for the Antarctic Centre, and a 70-minute documentary about an ancient and peaceful people on the island of Vanuatu, Yakel 3D. ARL teamed with The Video Factory to provide 3D stereo-alignment and editing expertise, developing spatial adjustment software and other applications used during post-production. ARL also made a 5-minute stereoscopic 3D animation immersing the viewer in the world of the Colossal Squid for the Te Papa Colossal Squid Exhibition in Wellington. The animation shows the Colossal Squid swimming and feeding at great depth before being caught by a fishing trawler, just as the specimen on display at the National Museum was.
