Ruapekapeka

Ruapekapeka (2017) - assets were exported from this project for use in later projects, including the foliage.

Ruapekapeka CU

Ruapekapeka CU (2017) - showing the inner palisade detail, the outer and inner palisade types were exported as separate assets for later projects

Puketakauere

Puketakauere (2019) - in addition to using assets from Ruapekapeka, Puketakauere had a variant outer palisade type (screened).

Puketakauere CU

Puketakauere CU (2019) - showing the inner palisades.

Pukerangiora

Pukerangiora (2019) - made almost entirely of assets from Ruapekapeka. Partially hidden by foliage and uninhabited in 1861 (tapu).

Te Arei

Te Arei (2019) - made from Ruapekapeka assets and Pratt's SAP assets. This series of palisades was a front-line Pa built to hinder SAP building.

Pratt's SAP

Pratt's SAP (2019) - inside the SAP showing assets, the sandbags and wicker gabions were often stolen in the evenings for use at Te Arei.

Te Arei CU

Te Arei CU (2019) - showing the gabions in use forming defensive earthworks at Te Arei.

possible speed tricks

Ruapekapeka Fog

Ruapekapeka Fog (2017) - fog can be used to hide things in the distance, reducing the need for large terrain and distance detail (less work, less render time). Unlike this shot, aiming the shot *camera* at a steeper angle to the ground would reap similar benefits.

pukekura

Pukekura sketch (2019) - A quick visual done to insert into a documentary pilot... the voiceover was already timed, so we flew in from the north at dusk and looked at Pukekura in silhouette with Otago harbour behind. Lighting and silhouettes negate the need to make things detailed. This also uses assets from Ruapekapeka and a terrain model we had lying around.

People

People (2019) - including people in-shot in period dress doubles the amount of time to complete a project. Prefer speed? No people :)

Research (2020) - (larger image will open in a new window) The more research ARL has to undertake the longer a project will take. For instance, we need to know the location, size and attitude of an historical site on the modern landscape to be able to start building. In this instance we have done some research to discover the approximate site of Orakau pa, based on exploratory work done in 2013. It also includes evidence of the SAP leading up to the pa. This took time.
